This was the first leg of our hike from Sunshine Village to Assiniboine Lodge. This stretch is around 7 miles from the ski village to the designated camping area. There is a gradual and very scenic descent down the trail to lake Howard Douglas, otherwise the terrain mostly meanders across mild peaks and valleys until the final stretch. The last three quarter miles or so of the trail is a steep descent down to the camping area. One of our party opted to do the trip without hiking poles, his knees paid dearly for it on the final descent. The designated camping area was nice but no campfires allowed is always a bummer when it's that cold out.
